Kate and Laura Mulleavy of the US label Rodarte revealed their much anticipated Pre-Spring 2012 presentation in a disused building in central Florence yesterday. The sisters are guest designers at Pitti W this season.
This beautiful installation of 10 elaborate gowns, detailed with feathers, Swarovski crystals, gold sun-ray pleated shards and tulle, were accessorised with a hand-forged gold head-piece, belts and breastplates. All of which showcased the signature techniques, sculptural detail and craftsmanship synonymous with the Rodarte label.
The Mulleavy sisters, who are big fans of Florence, were inspired by Bernini’s Baroque sculpture The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, Fra Angelico’s frescoes, and the monks’ cells at the convent of San Marco.
“Having studied art history at UC Berkeley, both Kate and I have been deeply inspired by Florence and it’s artistic legacy. We have spent countless hours dreaming of the poetic city, every detail magnified by our own curiosity and imagination.”
In contrast to these beautiful works of Haute Couture beauty, the gowns were encased or surrounded by super modern neon light constructions.
After this installation at Pitti W, the dresses will be on permanent display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
